The cornerstone of CUNY’s centralized technology services is a robust 24/7 managed network. All CUNY colleges are connected to the central computing facility and to Internet services (including Internet2) through CUNY’s wide-area network, consisting of fiber optic rings managed by CUNY in conjunction with the New York State Education and Research Net (NYSERNet) and leased lines from local carriers. CUNY’s network supports a fully deployed video conference and resource sharing that enables events and classroom instruction at multiple locations across the University and with outside partners. The network also enables CUNY’s campuses to connect to the High Performance Computing Center at the College of Staten Island.
Whenever possible, CIS supports the enterprise IT needs of the University through collaborative procurements and shared licenses. CIS has also led the development and support of enterprise technologies, such as SIMS, E-SIMS, E-Permit, Blackboard, CUNY.edu Portal and DegreeWorks. The University Data Center, operated by CIS, supports these and other enterprise applications on a 24x7x365 basis. CIS is also developing a University IT Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity plan that will include a DR site for critical enterprise applications to ensure they continue to function at all times.
CUNYFirst is an on-going effort to integrate 25 antiquated university systems supporting student administration, financial management and human resources into one unified enterprise system. CUNYFirst will re-engineer and standardize CUNYs core businesses processes and integrate them into a single computing architecture. Implementation across the campuses will occur in phases over the next few years. Integrating all data and processes into a unified system will allow students to get information on a centralized portal and will enable administration and faculty to access the same record in real time.
