The city of Van in eastern Turkey, recently sustained two major earthquakes in within a period of two weeks. While all earthquakes are terrible, this region is particularly vulnerable. It is located in remote, mountainous terrain (elevation of 5,676 feet) and endures long, harsh winters with temperatures hovering around minus 20 degrees. People have lost their homes and all their possessions. Without help, the people of Van, especially children and the elderly, simply will not be able to survive the winter.
