Developmental Education

The Office of Undergraduate Studies convenes the coordinators of CUNY's developmental immersion programs to share expertise, resources and high impact practices across the colleges.  Immersion programs provide opportunities for students to address remedial needs through intensive developmental workshops and courses offered before the start of the fall semester or in between the fall and spring semesters.  Since 1985, CUNY immersion programs have been offered tuition free to students who fail one or more of the CUNY basic skills assessments in reading, writing and mathematics.  Improving outcomes in developmental education is a major focus for CUNY.  Efforts are underway to expand evidence-based practice, evaluate specific CUNY programs and interventions, and review policies concerning remediation.
