Dea Shkupi: October 2012
Since joining the Volunteer Corps, Dea Shkupi has volunteered at numerous Citizenship Now! events:
Q. Tell us about yourself--do either you or a family member have a personal immigration story?
A. "My family came to the United States escaping a communist country and finding refuge in the United States, so I have experienced first hand what it means to be an immigrant in this country and start your life over from scratch."
Q. What is your favorite borough to volunteer at? And why?
A. "Manhattan, because it is easier for me to travel there."
Q. Why do you volunteer with the NYC/CUNY Citizenship Now! Volunteer Corps?
A. "I enjoy volunteering with CUNY because I want to make a difference in people's lives and volunteering gives me that opportunity."
Q. Has your knowledge of immigration law improved because of the time you have spent volunteering with us? What have you learned?
A. "CUNY Citizenship has definitely helped my knowledge of immigration law. It is an intense experience where you are faced with new problems every time and you have to find the solution. I also had the opportunity to meet other lawyers with experience in different areas of immigration law."
Q. What do you enjoy most at our events?
A. "I enjoy talking to people from different backgrounds who, sometimes, have very interesting stories to tell. I like to imagine who they are going to be in five years and what they are going to do with their lives once they become U.S. citizens."
Q. What are you looking forward to at the next event?
A. "I am looking forward to using my Spanish speaking skills to communicate with people applying for Citizenship."
Q. Outside of work and volunteering, tell us about some special hobbies or interests that you have?
A. "I like to write and paint."
