Jorge Rodriguez: April 2011
Jorge Rodriguez has been a member of the Corps for almost two years, and a Call-in volunteer since 2010.:
Q. What are your hobbies/interests?
A. "When I'm not studying for law school [my hobby is] my 3 year old daughter."
Q. Do you speak any other languages besides English?
A. "Spanish and [I am] trying to re-learn Mandarin."
Q. Why did you decide to volunteer with CUNY Citizenship Now! rather than a different organization?
A. "I'm a graduate of CUNY Queensborough Community College '96 and Baruch College '01."
Q. What brings you back to our events?
A. "All it takes is being able to help one person. And these events allow me to help a lot of people in a short amount of time. It also provides me some hands on experience in immigration matters, which is what I wish to specialize in when I graduate from law school."
Q. What has been your best experience with CUNY Citizenship Now!?
A. "My first Call-In event last year- 2010. I got to talk to a lot of callers and direct some, who were being taken advantage of by unscrupulous people who just wanted their money, to legitimate free organizations."
Q. What specifically interests you about immigration?
A. "Helping those who want nothing more than to be a part of the "American Dream." In this country we are free to do and be whatever our dreams say we can. If I can help someone achieve just a small portion of that then, it has been a part of my life well spent. My wife was a Venezuelan national (US Citizen as of 2010) so it has personal meaning to me to have someone you care about go through the immigration process."
Q. Do you have any advice for future volunteer corps members?
A. "For just a few hours of your time you can help someone in a way more than you may ever realize. Citizenship Now! is a great group of people doing a great thing for our community and I am proud to be a part of them."
