This course will explore the major religious traditions of India: Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism through their sacred cities, monuments, archaeological sites, texts, iconography, performance, and rituals. The 3-week journey begins in New Delhi, home to many religions, museums, and monuments. We then continue on to the ancient holy city of Varanasi/Benares and the village of Sarnath, where the Buddha preached his first sermon. In Sarnath we will stay at a Buddhist monastery and engage with Buddhist teachers and pilgrims from all over the world. Our last stop will be Mumbai (Bombay), the multicultural city by the sea. Side trips will include the Taj Mahal, the island of Elephanta, and the Jama Masjid Mosque. Additional discussions will include Christianity (believed to have been brought to Kerala in South India by the Apostle Thomas), Judaism (several migrations to India beginning circa 500 BCE), and Zoroastrianism (migrations to India in the 10th century CE).
