CPE FAQs

for students who were required to take the CPE in october:

1. I just took the test in October. When will I receive my results?

Results for the October 2010 CPE will be available to students online through the CUNY portal eCPE link during the second week of December 2010. Approximately two weeks later, students will receive their test results in a letter sent by U.S. mail.

2. If I failed the October CPE, do I have to retake the examination?

You do not have to retake the examination. The CPE is no longer a degree requirement for any CUNY student, past, present, or future.

3. How will a failure on the October CPE affect me?

The failure will have no effect, since passing the test is no longer a degree requirement. You will not be prohibited from registering for your courses. You will not be required to take an intervention such as a workshop. The failure will not affect your ability to transfer within CUNY.

4. Will the CPE results from the October exam appear on my transcript?

If you passed the CPE in October, "CPE Pass" will appear on your transcript and become part of your permanent record. Students with scores of 58 or higher will receive a notation of "pass with distinction". CPE failures do not appear on student transcripts.

5. I was deferred from taking the test in October. Do I still have to take the CPE in January?

No. The CPE is no longer a degree requirement for CUNY students. The CPE will not be administered again.

6. I failed the CPE and signed a contract to participate in a CPE workshop, which I have not yet done. Do I still have to

take the workshop?

No. Workshop contracts are no longer in effect. However, if you have weaknesses as indicated by Task 1 subscores, you are encouraged to avail yourself of your college's learning and writing center resources to strengthen your skills.

7. I want to appeal my CPE score. Can I still do so?

You may not appeal your score. However, all scores within two points of the minimum passing score were appealed automatically and were re-scored by a second pair of readers.

For All students:

8. If I failed the CPE or did not take it when I was required to do so, will this affect my ability to transfer to another

CUNY college?

No. CPE test results will no longer affect transfer decisions.

9. I am no longer enrolled at CUNY because I failed the CPE three or more times. Can I now be readmitted?

Previous CPE test results will not be considered when you apply for readmission. To be considered for readmission to your college, contact your college's Admissions Office.

10. I satisfied all degree requirements except for the CPE. Now that the CPE is no longer a degree requirement, am I

eligible for my degree?

Yes, if you have in fact completed all degree requirements you may apply for graduation. Please refer to individual campus websites for college specific application instructions and commencement FAQs.

11. Will a new test replace the CPE? If so, will it be a degree requirement?

CUNY is not considering a test to replace the CPE as a degree requirement at this time.

12. Are CUNY's skill proficiency requirements in reading, writing, and math affected by the Board action on the CPE?

No. Although the CPE is no longer a degree requirement, the basic skills requirements remain in effect. All students must meet these requirements unless they are specifically exempted. More information is available here>>
