The Student Investment Advocate’s (SIA) Program develops students’ leadership values and skills through experiential civic engagement and advocacy activities. Within the context of the University legislative priorities, SIA seeks to provide students with direct and transferable experiences in the political, legislative, and budgetary processes on the city, state and federal levels. SIA is ideal for students who express an interest in having an impact on public policy or wish to participate in the political process.
During the 2011-2012 academic year, SIA students participated in The New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, SOMOS El Futuro Conference, as well as, a number of trips to Albany and elected officials’ district office, to convey the importance of CUNY’s legislative budget to their educational experience. Several students also had the opportunity to testify at legislative hearings.
